Art Takes Flight
Soaring to new heights of creative freedom and expression
The Program
June 17, 2023 was a day for the ABG history books! In collaboration with Dreamline Aviation and Signature Aviation, ABG painted its historic 72nd mural on an airplane, which is now a permanent art piece at the Van Nuys airport. Joined by members of the community, ABG painted “The Uncaged Bird,” which was inspired by youth from Casa Esperanza and led by ABG’s team of Artists in Residence, Carlo and Ethel Zafranco of AQMNI.
This mural represents freedom, dreams, and the courage to rise above adversity. The imagery—crafted through the collective creativity of the youth—embodies the idea that every young person deserves the opportunity to soar, unrestricted by the barriers of circumstance. By painting this mural on an decomissioned airplane, we reinforced the belief that with the right support, passion, and vision, anything can be a child’s canvas and anything is possible.
The day was filled with collaboration, celebration, and storytelling, as community members joined hands with ABG’s artists to transform the airplane into a flying canvas of inspiration. The event showcased the power of public art to uplift, unite, and create lasting impact—not just on walls, but in spaces that reach far beyond.
This historic moment at Van Nuys Airport is a testament to what happens when art, community, and opportunity intersect. It is a reminder that creativity knows no boundaries—and now, neither does this mural.
We are so thankful to our sponsors and friends!
